Christmas & Picasso in Seattle

It’s almost Christmas in Seattle and there are a lot of fun things to do.

Go to the Seattle Art Museum to see the fabulous Picasso exhibit that’s here in Seattle through January 17. While the Musée National Picasso in Paris is closed for renovations, they are letting a huge number of fabulous pieces travel the world, and here in Seattle we get to be first to see the collection. It’s over 150 pieces that span his entire career – paintings, drawings, sculpture in bronze, cut metal, even wood – as well as photographs that chronicle his life.

You can see the artist’s progression from life-like drawings to experimenting with flattening his dimensions and abstracting from reality to his famous geometric shapes.

When you’re in Seattle staying with us at the Inn of Twin Gables, it’s a short drive or an easy bus ride to get downtown to the SAM (the bus stop is just 2 blocks from the Inn and will drop you in front of the Museum. Whether you get tickets for Picasso or just wander around the galleries seeing your favorite genre or period artists, it’s a very relaxing way to spend a few hours and it’s only a few steps from other great downtown destinations like Pike Market and Nordstrom.

Sharing Recipes

I just got an e-mail from one of our past guests asking for our recipe for Rosemary Lemonade and thought I'd better share it with the rest of you.

Inn of Twin Gables

Rosemary Lemonade & Limeade

4 – 5 large sprigs of fresh rosemary, rinsed (5 – 6 inches long)

1 cup freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice
7 cups water
1 - 1/12 cups sugar (depending on how sweet you like it)

Bring 4 cups of water to a boil, add rosemary, remove from heat and steep for 20 minutes uncovered.
Strain warm liquid into a pitcher and add sugar – stir to dissolve,
Add remaining water, lemon (lime) juice and ice to equal 2 quarts.
In summer, chill and serve with a sprig of rosemary over ice; or reheat and serve hot in winter. Enjoy!

Great Spring Deals in Seattle

We had an absolutely gorgeous last week. The weather was unseasonably warm, in the mid-50's and I was able to get out in the garden every day and clean up after the winter. The herbs and flowers are already coming back with the crocus, daffodils and forsythia in bloom now. I'll be adding more soon, so the garden should be lovely this season.

Yes, again this Spring we've got Dine Around Seattle , March 1 - 31, when many of our top restaurants offer a 3-course meal for just $30 - some offer a lunch for $15, Sunday through Thursday. Here's the link you you can check it out yourself and decide which yummy restaurant you want to try.

Also, coming in April is Seattle Restaurant Week kicks off April 18-29, more than 100 participating King County restaurants will offer three-course dinners for $25 Sundays through Thursdays. Some will also add a $15 three-course lunch." The link is not complete yet, but will be in March.

Here's a few fun things going on in Seattle this month:

Plants: Volunteer Park Conservatory, ongoing and free. This time of year has some of the best colors in and around the conservatory, if you want to get out of the rain and cold. See beauiful tropical plants and their wonderful collection of orchids. (Tuesday - Sunday) 10 am - 4 pm, with a special night opening December 4.

Libations: Fall Cider Celebration, Nov 12th, $30. Approximately 13 brands representing over 30 hard (alcoholic) cider varieties will be poured during this open tasting, paired with hors d'oeuvres.

Christmas Ship Festival, starting Nov 28th and goes on through December 23. Cruise around the water, take a look at all of the pretty homes with lights, enjoy a cup of hot chocolate, and sing a few Christmas carols. Or, if you don't care to go on the ships, they visit many locations around town, including Gasworks Park, Olympic Sculpture Park, Pier 66, the Locks and Golden Gardens - all close to Inn of Twin Gables.

First Big Storm in Seattle

Last night Seattle and Inn of Twin Gables had our first big storm of the season. About 7:45 PM the electricity went out, but fortunately all of the power-out lights we have at the inn did their job and gave us some bright lights so we weren't completely in the dark. The power company said the shortage was in most of Queen Anne Hill and Magnolia and was estimated to be repaired by midnight.

What to do ?!?!? After making sure everyone was OK we lit a roaring fire in the fireplace in the living room and pulled out some board games. It was kind of like camping out in the safety and warmth of the inn. I make some hot tea with the water in the reserve of our coffee machine which is constantly hot and we settled in to relax. The lights came back on early, around 9:15 PM, hurrah!! After a nice time in front of the fire, everybody went to bed. About midnight the thunder and torrential rain started and didn't stop for a long time. I had to take our little toy poodles Poppi and Misty to bed with me to keep them from shaking from the roar of the thunder.

Well, summer is totally gone now although the last few days were just delightful with sun and a little warmth. The leaves and nuts from our giant black walnut tree are almost gone, the maples have changed colors to oranges and crimsons and are losing their leaves every day, and Thanksgiving is just around the corner.
